Gregory King grew up as the tenth child in a family of seventeen children on the New Jersey Shore.
He was an altar boy, an Eagle Scout and a page in the United States Senate. He was educated at the George Washington University and the London School of Economics.
After several years working on Capitol Hill, in 1988, he became the spokesman in of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, a position he held until joining the Clinton Administration as an openly gay presidential appointee.
